Best Channel Partner Programs: How to Evaluate Them
The best channel partner program is the one whose product your clients already use and whose economics fit your business. Evaluate client fit, earning model, renewal and refund rules, cost to qualify, lead flow, deal registration, marketplace access, and stability. Microsoft, AWS, HubSpot, and Salesforce all reward delivered customer outcomes and certified staff.
Why there is no single best program
A channel partner program is good for a specific partner: one whose clients use the vendor's product, whose team can meet the qualification bar, and whose business model matches how the vendor pays. A program that rewards a cloud consultancy handsomely may be useless to a marketing agency. So this guide does not rank programs or score them. It sets out the criteria that decide value, then describes how four widely known programs are structured, using each vendor's own pages as checked on 2026-10-22. Terms change, so confirm the details on the vendor's site before applying.
Eight criteria for evaluating a partner program
- Client fit. Do your current clients already use or need the product?
- Earning model. Referral commission, resale margin, services, or a mix, and for how long you earn on each customer.
- Renewals and refunds. Whether renewals and upgrades pay, and what is clawed back on churn.
- Cost to qualify. Fees, certifications, and the staff hours behind them.
- Lead flow and co-selling. Whether the vendor passes leads, lists you in a directory, or sells alongside you.
- Deal registration and conflict rules. How a registered deal is protected from the vendor's own reps and other partners.
- Marketplace access. Whether you can sell through the vendor's marketplace and customer billing.
- Program stability. How often tiers and requirements are reorganised, and how existing partners are moved.
Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program
Microsoft's program is built around Solutions Partner designations in six solution areas: Data and AI (Azure), Digital and App Innovation (Azure), Infrastructure (Azure), Business Applications, Modern Work, and Security. According to Microsoft's Solutions Partner FAQ on Microsoft Learn (checked 2026-10-22), a designation requires at least 70 out of 100 partner capability score points, with points in every category and subcategory, across performance, skilling, and customer success. A designation is a prerequisite for specializations, which validate deeper technical expertise. Listed benefits include product benefits such as Azure credits and cloud subscriptions, go-to-market resources, and support and advisory services. The annual fee depends on the benefits selected, and further designations carry no extra fee. Microsoft retired its legacy silver and gold competencies on September 30, 2022, and stopped selling their benefits entirely from January 22, 2025, a reminder that program structures change.
AWS Partner Network (APN)
AWS says partners can join the APN at no cost by creating an AWS Partner Central account, then enrol in partner paths (aws.amazon.com, checked 2026-10-22). Its services path has three tiers, Select, Advanced, and Premier, each listing a 2,500 dollar annual APN fee. Requirements rise by tier: AWS lists 4, 8, and 20 accredited individuals, rising counts of foundational and technical certified staff, and 3, 20, and 50 launched customer opportunities with minimum total monthly recurring revenue for each tier. Premier adds an executive business review, more than six months meeting the Premier criteria, and three AWS Competency, MSP, or Well-Architected designations, at least one of which must be the MSP, DevOps, or CloudOps competency. Software and services partners can also sell through AWS Marketplace, which suits partners whose clients already buy on AWS billing.
HubSpot Solutions Partner Program
HubSpot positions its Solutions Partner Program for service firms, consultancies, and agencies that serve mid-market and enterprise customers (hubspot.com, checked 2026-10-22). From 15 July 2026 its page sets a 400 dollar a month membership as the entry requirement, waived if the partner's own net HubSpot product subscription meets or exceeds 400 dollars a month after discounts. Above that entry level the tiers are Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Elite. HubSpot says partners earn revenue share on the deals they source but publishes no standard rate or duration for it. Its separate Upmarket Referral Program pays 20 percent for one year from the date sold, and only to Platinum, Diamond, or Elite partners in good standing who hold CRM Implementation accreditation, on Partner Assisted deals worth at least 3,000 dollars MRR on Professional or Enterprise subscriptions. Listed benefits include a Partner Development Manager, certifications through HubSpot Academy, a Solutions Directory listing, and the ability to waive HubSpot onboarding fees for clients. The model suits agencies whose main revenue is services, with commission as a second stream.
Salesforce Partner Program
Salesforce reorganised its consulting track for its fiscal 2027 program. In a Salesforce news post dated March 2, 2026, the company said it was moving to two tiers, Summit and Select, and evolving 170 legacy distinctions into 28 core competencies, with recognition tied to project outcomes, customer satisfaction, and certifications. Salesforce Ben reported on March 3, 2026 that each competency has Accredited and Expert recognition levels, and that some details for partners outside Agentforce work were not yet confirmed. Partners evaluating Salesforce should read the current consulting program policies directly, because tier placement under the new structure is still being applied.
What the four have in common
All four measure partners on delivered customer outcomes and certified people, not on enthusiasm or signups. Microsoft scores performance, skilling, and customer success; AWS counts launched opportunities and certified staff; Salesforce ties competencies to project outcomes and customer satisfaction; HubSpot scores partners on sourced, assisted, and managed revenue, and adds retention at its top tiers. The common thread is that serious programs reward revenue and results. Vendors building their own programs can copy that principle at small scale: score partners on revenue actions, show them where they stand, and pay from the same records. HyypeFi applies this with a 0 to 100 Hyype Score computed only from revenue actions.
Smaller SaaS programs
Most partner programs are not run by hyperscalers. Smaller SaaS vendors usually have no fee, lighter or no certification, and a simpler referral or reseller agreement, but also less lead flow and fewer co-selling resources. For a partner, the trade is lower cost to join against less vendor support. Judge them on the same eight criteria, with extra weight on renewal terms and payment reliability, which vary most between smaller programs.
Frequently asked questions
- Which channel partner program is the best?
- The best program is the one whose product your clients already use, whose qualification costs you can carry, and whose earning model matches your business. A cloud consultancy may get most from AWS or Microsoft, while a marketing agency may get more from HubSpot. Compare client fit, earning period, renewal rules, cost to qualify, lead flow, and conflict rules rather than looking for a universal ranking.
- Are large vendor partner programs worth it for small firms?
- They can be, if your clients already buy that vendor's products. Entry is often free or low cost, but higher tiers require certified staff and delivered customer projects, which take time. Small firms usually benefit most from directory listings, certifications that win client trust, and commission on deals they would have recommended anyway, rather than from chasing top tiers early.
- How often do channel partner programs change?
- Often enough to plan for it. Microsoft replaced its silver and gold competencies with Solutions Partner designations in 2022, and Salesforce announced in March 2026 a move to two consulting tiers and 28 competencies. Read the current program guide before each renewal, and avoid building a business plan around a single tier benefit that the vendor could restructure.
- What is a partner capability score?
- It is Microsoft's measure for its Solutions Partner designations. According to Microsoft Learn, it scores partners on performance, skilling, and customer success within each solution area, and a designation needs at least 70 out of 100 points with points in every category. Partners track progress on the Solutions Partner page in Partner Center, where data is typically refreshed monthly.
